Maxi Refashion

2014-01-23 12.28.47

Remember this printed dress I found for $5? it was cute, but I have an over abundance of maxi dresses/skirts and it was about 20 sizes too big..

So I chopped the skirt portion off and created a pattern from one of my favorite tank tops. After I made the top part of my new dress, I used the rest of the bottom of the skirt to create the bottom portion of the dress. As I’ve said before, I pretty much make everything up as I go so here is how it turned out.

My first dress completely from scratch, and no pattern. I still have a lot to learn but it’s not a bad start!

And this photo was all the motivation I needed to get on the treadmill, and get some SUN! :)

20 Minute Pillow Case Tutorial

So I have to apologize for my little blogging hiatus. I really have no excuse except that life is busy! Although I’ve been MIA these past few weeks, the up side is that I’ve completed some fun little projects and stock piled all my photos so that eventually I could share them all with you.

As you may know, one way to spruce up a room in a pinch is to add a few pillows that pop. Accent pillows can be pretty pricy if you buy them in a department store, so my advice is to create your own (it’s much more rewarding that way right?) I’m still learning the best ways to explain how I make the things I do, because mostly I just make it up as I go. So I’ve put together this quick tutorial to hopefully get you started, or at least inspired, to add a bit of style to any room with some fun pillows. Here goes..2014-03-10 10.13.24First- measure the height and width of your pillow. Add 1 inch to the height for seam allowance and 5 or 6 inches to the width for seam allowance and for the overlap part of the pillow case where you will insert your pillow (hopefully the pictures will help you out, like I said, I’m new to this explaining how I do things.. thing) My pillow was a perfect square so it was 21 inches tall and 42 inches all the way around.

measurementsOnce you’ve cut your fabric, fold the two short ends to make your hem, and sew.

2014-02-28 12.21.18Once your ends are hemmed, fold the two sides inward with the right sides of the fabric facing each other, with one side overlapping the other by several inches until the width of your fabric is the right width of your pillow. (If this is confusing I’m sorry!) It took a bit of playing around with it to get the overlap part just right, and in the middle where it should be. Once you’ve got it, pin it in place and sew the top and bottom seams.

2014-02-28 12.25.48Flip it right side out and use your fingers to poke out the corners and VOILA! A brand new pillow case!

2014-03-05 15.16.36Isn’t she lovely? And thrifty at that, I got this fabric for $3.

And pssst.. this is one of my finished dining chairs I’ve been slaving over for much longer than I’d anticipated. I’m hoping to have them finished soon so I can share the before and after transformation.

2014-03-01 10.40.36For now these little beauties are resting on our bed.

Hope you liked my tutorial. Happy Monday Y’all.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

thrifty thursday

I have to admit that I’ve had these hidden gems in my sewing closet for a while now with the intentions of refashioning them, but I’ve been going back and forth about what to do with each one.

2014-01-23 12.28.47You wouldn’t know by looking, but this dress is an XL and I’m willing to bet I could fit a few of my friends in it with me :) So it was definitely worth the $5 for this awesome fabric. I’m thinking a cute tank dress similar in cut and style to this Mara Hoffman dress from RevolveClothing.com.

2014-02-06 10.24.53And for this monstrosity, I’m thinking a really trendy clown suit. I could pull that off. OK maybe I’m losing it, but I really see some potential in this $3 jumbo polka dot collared shirt. I have 2 ideas in mind:

1. shorts for Gigi

polka shortsor 2. A skirt for me

polka skirtI’m terrible at making decisions so we shall see what really happens with my thrifty finds, but I love getting my creative buzz on in the mean time.

Happy Thursday my loves.

stitches & studs

It has been 2 years since I received one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten – a sewing machine. When I set it on the table for the first time I was giddy with excitement, and also clueless about how to use it. I’m happy to say I’ve come a long way in the sewing world since then, and my favorite projects are thrift store refashions like this one.

studs4 Ok so I know it’s huge and wrinkled, but in life you always have to look at the positives: cashmere, a studded collar, and 1 dollar.  Holler!!!

I wish I had taken photos of how I resized this beautiful sweater but I was so excited I about it that I just pinned snipped and stitched – and boom! It was gorgeous..

It came out exactly how I wanted.. high-low hem and a more fitted look all around. Thanks for stopping by to check out my sweet sweater refashion, and I promise to do step by step refashion posts in the future so you can follow along with your thrifty finds.

Happy Friday!

fun fabric friday

Someone who loves me very much gave me a Jo-Ann gift card for Christmas. They were having the sale of a lifetime, and you only live once. I left with over 25 yards of fabric.

So far I’m mid project with the top three fabrics. Can’t wait to show you what I’m doing with all of them! Oh and I found this little dingle hopper on super duper clearance because it had a tiny crack in the bottom corner. PPSSHhhhhh…
